The IELTS Reading test for both Academic and General Training is typically scored at the same level. However, the texts in the Academic Reading section may be more challenging compared to those in the General Training section
Duration of the test: 60 minutes (for both Academic and General tests)
To improve your reading speed, practice reading a variety of English texts regularly. Before answering each question, read it carefully so you can easily find the answers later. If possible, jot down potential answers as you go. When taking the IELTS on a computer, use the option to highlight or make notes in the text. Start by skimming through the material to get a general understanding, then read slowly and carefully, keeping the questions in mind. Remember, you don't need to use outside knowledge-everything you need to answer will be in the text. Read thoroughly to avoid missing details. Always check that your answers are spelled correctly according to the passage. Some questions may test your understanding of the main theme, so be alert for keywords or concepts that represent the central idea. It's helpful to underline important details, such as dates, as they often appear in related questions. Make sure your spelling is correct, especially when copying directly from the passage. If you're using paper for the IELTS, record your answers on the answer sheet, as you won't be given extra time to transfer them later.
In the IELTS Reading section, a variety of question types are included. These can include multiple-choice questions, True/False/Not Given, Yes/No/Not Given, Matching Information, and Sentence Completion questions. It is important to prepare and practice thoroughly for each type of question to perform well.
To enhance your reading skills for the IELTS, practice techniques like skimming and scanning, and continue practicing until you feel confident on test day. Additionally, focus on mastering each question type. Dedicate each day to practicing one specific question type and develop strategies for finding and recording answers quickly, without wasting time.
In the General Training IELTS module, the reading passages are typically informational, similar to what you might find in brochures, newspapers, or magazines. In the Academic IELTS module, the passages cover three distinct academic subjects. You do not need to have prior knowledge of these topics before taking the test.
